Wall Hangings by Femke van Gemert at Enlightened Design – London Design Festival 2016

Femke van Gemert studied fashion design and worked as a trend forecaster in the fashion industry, but changed course when she saw the high turnover rate of clothing increase and its quality decrease proportionally. The artist will be presenting magnificent wall hangings and wall panels, all handmade from pieces of fabric sorted by colour, which tell a personal story. For example, the rich green hues of her Longings I, Deep Dense piece, inspired by a jungle tour through the densely forested terrain of Thailand. Femke van Gemert advocates reuse, awareness and originality, and makes us reconsider our consumption behaviour. ‘We throw away our clothing easily, but the material can often still be used. You can reuse it and give it another purpose as a delightful wall hanging that improves acoustics.’
